SUF Structure
The Patron

President James Michel was Minister for Education from 1979- 89 under the government
of President Albert Rene, and he was instrumental in the democratisation of
education in Seychelles. Under this policy, Seychelles introduced compulsory
education for all and as a consequence achieved over 90% literacy rate. Although he
has subsequently handled a number of other ministerial portfolios, including the
vice- presidency, his passion for promoting learning has never waned. His vision
for education continues today with the formation of a foundation to establish the
University of Seychelles.

The Chairman

The Chairman of the Foundation is Dr Rolph Payet. Dr. Rolph Payet is an accomplished researcher and policy specialist in the
field of environment, sustainable development and international environment
governance.
In 2007 he was nominated Young Global Leader by the World Economic
Forum. He also shared in the Nobel Peace Prize as a Leader Author of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Dr Rolph Payet is also passionate
about education and research. He is currently co-supervising two PhD students
with the University of Kalmar, and is responsible for two regional research
projects on tourism, climate change and coral reefs.
He is the founder of the
Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology and a co-founder of the
Island Conservation Society, an NGO.

The Board of Trustees
The Foundation is directed by a Board of Trustees. Members were appointed based
upon relevant background and experience. The Chairman of the Board is Dr.

The Advisory Committee
In order to initiate and engage the scientific community in the establishment of the
University of Seychelles, an Advisory Committee has been established comprising
of eminent academics of international repute. >>more
The Fund Raising Committee
The Committee’s function is to raise funds for the implementation and development
of the Seychelles University, including its infrastructure and technical
operational aspects, as well as support systems for students. Members are
persons with experience in business and global leadership. >>more
